Meditation and Yoga Retreat at Epic Sana Algarve

November 1, 2016

After a summer of indulgence and WEEK-long celebration for my sister’s wedding in Siena I was ready for some down time. The Quarter Life Health Project (see previous posts) had been my saving grace and much needed peaceful interlude preluding summer’s final hedonistic finale which left me well and truly spent! Morning breaks. View from my room. I arrived at Epic Sana Algarve, located on Praia da Falésia beach just 35 minutes from Faro airport, on October 1st for a week of yoga, meditation, beach walks and general bliss. Oh and the opportunity to bask in October’s sunshine and 28 degree celsius heat suited me just PERFECTLY too!… Continue reading...

The Quarter Life Health Project: The Experience

October 10, 2016
Processed with VSCO with f2 preset
So you’ve heard about the gang, the grub and how I felt before going to TQLHP retreat at Gran Hotel Benahavis, (see previous three posts) but how did it feel to actually be there and what was the experience like? I’ve been sworn to secrecy on sharing the special events that took place during the retreat so the surprise isn’t ruined for future guests, but I will tell you the general gist and how it affected me. The combination of yoga, meditation, workshops, walks, downtime and sunshine all shared with open-hearted and open-minded women was beautiful. There wasn’t a single soul that left the retreat not feeling more relaxed, energised and positive.… Continue reading...

The Quarter Life Health Project Retreat: The Food

September 20, 2016

“Indulgent, delicious, wholesome and nutrient rich food is very much at the heart of our ethos at The Holistic Health Project.” Happily I found this statement to be true although perhaps “indulgent” is a slight stretch. The vegan gluten-free meals are all masterminded by THHP founder Stephanie and I found myself constantly quizzing her on the recipes, excited to recreate them myself at home. We ate each light and wholesome meal altogether and the buffet style format meant there was always more for anyone who wanted it. The emphasis is on nourishment not deprivation via mainly local, sustainable and organic produce.… Continue reading...

Quarter Life Health Project Retreat (Before)

September 13, 2016

When the invitation came to join The Holistic Health Project for its Quarter Life retreat in Spain I admit I had to think twice about accepting. Despite the alluring descriptions of Kundalini yoga, hiking, meditation and naturopathic (the use of whole and organic foods as medicine – an integral concept of healing in many indigenous societies) vegan cuisine that would be on offer in Benahavis, a mountain village between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda 7 km from the coast, there was something about the following phrase that didn’t sit well with me. “The Retreat for 20/30 something females going through a quarter life crisis” it rather uninvitingly dubbed itself.… Continue reading...

The Smart Guide to Travel Sustenance

January 20, 2016
2015-12-15 14.56.18-1
We’ve all experienced the perils of plane food. That dreaded moment when the trays of dehydrated bland blobs accompanied by unidentifiable desserts (so bright that they’d certainly be deemed deadly to any species in the jungle) land in our laps masked in tinfoil to momentarily disguise the misery that lies beneath. (Click here if you need a recap.) It’s a debilitating experience, peeling back that silver paper – but worse still is the aftermath of the stodgy, sugary assault on the senses. Your sugar levels suddenly sore only to plummet lower than before soon after leaving you feeling sluggish as your digestion goes into overdrive. … Continue reading...

Third and Final day at Thirty Eight Degrees North, Ibiza

November 11, 2015

I got to know the breakfast staff at Aguas de Ibiza very well. With so much exercise I developed a routine of having two breakfasts because I definitely needed the extra fuel. And it would have been rude not to right? But this wasn’t an excuse to go crazy at the buffet. I kept my meals balanced and nutritious. Round (I) (eaten in a flash so no time for a snap) was berries and cereal and round two was eggs/smoked salmon and veggies with a smooth almond milk cappuccino. After breakfast round (I) of berries and cereal (eaten in a flash so no time for a snap) it was off to yoga, which eased my muscles back into moving gently which I was particularly grateful for given how stiff I was from the previous days here!… Continue reading...

Day Two at Thirty Eight Degrees North, Ibiza

November 4, 2015

Day Two of Optimal Fitness Week. I woke up feeling ready to work it. That is – ready to give the morning circuits, the kickboxing, the TRX, the  boxing aaaaaand the yoga – my all. Happily, the sun made an appearance so we did the circuits outside with the awesome Faye Lovell. This girl rocks! She somehow managed to make each session super engaging, effective and dynamic. The circuits (pictured below) started with an energetic warm-up before the burpees, sprints, lunges, mountain climbers and the like ensued… Doing these exercises outside in the dappled sunlight and shade of the tall pine trees felt so invigorating.… Continue reading...

Optimal Fitness Week at Luxury Fitness and Spa Destination Thirty Eight Degrees North, Ibiza

October 30, 2015
PA200129
Even though Thirty Eight Degrees North (38DN), a luxury spa and fitness destination situated within the 5 star eco hotel Aguas de Ibiza in Santa Eulalia is just three years old, it’s already created a lot of hype. Guests can “reset their co-ordinates” utilising the spa, gym and the beautiful beach surroundings for outdoor training. I’d read glowing reviews from celebs such as Amanda Byram, who described it as “6 days of intense yet brilliant and enjoyable exercise in a fantastic group environment..Two (much fitter and lighter) thumbs up!!” Kelly Hoppen said “the results were fantastic” and Mel Blatt calls 38DN her “go-to for getting into shape”.… Continue reading...

Luxury RnR at Hotel Du Cap Post VS challenge…

July 14, 2015

As you can imagine, I was pretty pooped after my VS training so when an invitation to go to the otherworldy Hotel Du Cap in Antibes arrived, I couldn’t believe my luck. It was this sight (above) that first made my hair stand on end, catapulting me straight into the French riviera fairy tale. One cannot describe how special this historic hotel is – (it was the setting for F Scott Fitzgerald’s book, Tender is the Night and has played host to A-listers and Hollywood stars throughout time) all painted in pale ivory, hints of gilt and marble, with carpets dressed in corals and exotic plant-patterns (captured brilliantly below by my belle, Tatianna Hambro).… Continue reading...
