Beach Retreat: A slow weekend in Cornwall

September 26, 2019
If you want to skip my memories of Cornwall (I can get a little carried away sometimes) and scroll straight to inspo for a nourishing and wholesome Cornish weekend please go right to paragraph 4! Above images curtesy of Visit Cornwall It can be easy to forgo Cornwall in favour of a firmer promise of sunshine from warmer climes but if you take a chance on Cornwall it will be in your heart forever. From as far back as I can remember and even before then every Summer since I was born started with the family trip to Rock – a village in North Cornwall on the north-eastern bank of the River Camel.… Continue reading...

A powerful reminder of how food effects our mood and general wellbeing

July 16, 2019
A couple of months ago I returned to London after racing in Riga with some sore muscles. Nothing serious but enough to make me take a step back, significantly reduce the mileage and concentrate mostly on building strength before beginning the next phase of my training. I’m committed to ensuring my legs stay strong so I can nail all the trails and set some super challenges! Yet, it’s amazing how cutting the running so significantly effected me. Running has become so integral to my life and without it I was surprised by just how much my mood and energy dropped. Perhaps this seems counterintuitive to any non-runners.… Continue reading...

My Veganuary

February 1, 2019
Since the Veganuary movement started five years ago participant numbers have more than doubled each year and a total of over 250,000 people in 193 countries have signed up. This Veganuary I decided to join them and devote myself to being wholly vegan for one month. I was mostly eating a diet of plants anyway but the occasional piece of fish or cheese did pass my lips. Oh and I can’t exclude the sweet treats I consumed, some of which contained dairy. I’d not touched red meat for ages (years) though and had been repulsed by chicken and eggs ever since watching the 2017 documentary film What the health, which critiques the health impact of meat and dairy products consumption, and exposes the malpractices of  leading health and pharmaceutical organisations which support animal consumption in highly questionable ways.… Continue reading...

Get one of your five a day with yes! snack bars

November 27, 2018
*Disclaimer: This post was kindly sponsored by Nestlé YES! The snack bar market has come a long, long way since my childhood days when the Tracker bar ruled the roost. Its ingredients? Sugar, palm fat, sweetened condensed skimmed milk, glucose syrup, palm kernel fat, emulsifiers – you get the pretty unappealing picture. Back then little attention was paid to the ingredients of such bars and pre-made meals et- cetera. Taste was what mattered most and consumers weren’t so nutrition-savvy as to question what ingredients they were ingesting. Thankfully, nutritional awareness has been and continues to grow which can be seen in the expanded range of healthier snack bars, supplements and healthier food alternatives that  are now on the market.… Continue reading...

Sydney: My Balmain guide

July 11, 2018
Straight after I completed the Hawkes Bay 10K I caught a flight to Sydney still soaring on a high of endorphins. I felt like a live wire. So free and self-sufficient and energetic and excited and like nothing was holding me back. I was in my element. I was pursuing my passions, living in the moment and being completely true to myself in the most beautiful, wild places on the planet. Life felt so good. I should add, quickly, that this state is certainly not the norm for me. I’m generally an optimist but just like everyone else I have my shit storm days and I’ve certainly experienced adversity.… Continue reading...

5 of Amsterdam’s finest Brunch Spots: the Super healthy, super indulgent and everything in-between!

December 4, 2017
I’ve just returned from a short stay in Amsterdam and I loved it. If you’re into your coffee’s and cafe culture then you too will love the dam. I’d heard so much about this eclectic city and yes, mainly how the opportunity to buy weed and magic mushrooms exists on most canal corners and how you can pop into cafes and indulge in both of these things openly. Every picture I’d seen enticed me. Cute canals, cafes, coffee shops and culture (the Anne Frank house is a MUST see) – I don’t know why it took me so long to visit!… Continue reading...

MBFR: The food

September 13, 2017
Thinking about the super delicious, super nutritious food we were treated to on the MBFR week in Verbier makes my mouth water BIG TIME! We were completely spoiled with a very talented chef who never failed to keep us very happy and fuelled with superfoods so we could maximise our performance when it came to training. Think fresh, hot, crunchy coconut and almond breads for breakfast, eggs, avo, chia seed puddings, porridge, fruit, smoothies – the health foodie DREAM! Lunch was packed for us and contrary to the usual sarnie and chocolate bar lunchbox, ours looked like this… As for dinner… As you can see from this small taster (pun intended) of what we ate, the food was wholesome and we weren’t deprived.… Continue reading...

What we ate on MTLR

June 26, 2017
With so much exercise we needed to eat a lot to keep our energy up. And eat we did and very well too. Breakfast was a feast of Lucy Rocks musleis (vegan, gluten free), Pip & Nut butters, fresh fruit, chia puddings, custard tarts (we were in Portugal – it would be ride not to), eggs and toast. Lunch was usually a picnic on the beach and this was a simple chicken salad. Fruit, crisps and biccies were also on tap. This wasn’t a retreat for turning the treats down! For me, dinner was when I got really excited. Rainbow arrays of exotic salads, spreads, herbs and veggies were presented with artistic flair, accompanied by bigger, heartier dishes like risotto, pasta, paella and big meat dishes.… Continue reading...
