It’s a Big Hit: Coffee and Butter in your Cuppa

September 23, 2014

The all important question for coffee lovers, “One lump or two” now has a totally different meaning. I’m referring to the latest caffeine craze where devotees, (who include Ed Sheeran and players on the L.A. Lakers) blend their morning cuppa with a serving of… butter.

Sounds a bit weird and whacky but Dave Asprey, creator of Bulletproof Coffee and the man who popularised the concoction explains on his website that, “It makes for the creamiest, most satisfying cup of coffee you’ve ever had”. I know what you’re thinking – that it sounds OTT and indulgent and alarmingly calorific – BUT Asprey credits a high-fat diet to his 80-pound weight loss AND believes the butter’s high-fat content will slow the time it takes for your body to metabolize the coffee’s caffeine, leading to increased energy, decreased crash and therefore no need to snack.

I’m all for drinking coffee (post on the benefits of caffeine to come) and a high fat diet and no, you don’t need to #youdidnoteatthat  tag me because let me tell you, I practise what I preach. I am of course talking about the saturated (good) fats found in avocados, nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, almonds, dark chocolate and yes, butter and I’ll post more on the benefits of a high fat diet later. But back to Asprey for now.

As well as offering a richer, creamier taste, Asprey says this buttery drink provides all of the energizing benefits of a cup of coffee, without the four o’clock slump. But he is rather specific about the type of butter you use. Apparently, bog standard butter like Land O’Lakes and Anchor just won’t cut it, you have to use grass-fed butter, superior “toxin free” coffee beans plus brain octane oil (the latter which I will be investigating further). “You will not get the satisfying, lack of food cravings effect or the mental clarity” otherwise.

I can’t wait to try this creamy caffeine concoction and I’ll be posting pics of me practising what I preach on instagram as well as on here. Stay tuned and why not try it with me and let me know how you like it!

NB: I am now trying Lucie Hirst’s recommendation (please see comment below this post) of coconut oil and coffee. Stay tuned to see my thoughts on this too! xx

Here’s my butter cuppa! Read my comment below to see the verdict!x
