Magic in the Mountains: A week with MBFR

September 12, 2017

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.” John Muir, The Mountains of California.

This was no ordinary fitness retreat. Mountain Beach Fitness Retreats offer a range of breathtakingly (in every sense of the word!) beautiful destinations for their week-long fitness retreats and Verbier, (although I’m obviously biased having been and had an absolute blast) has to be the most sparkling jewel in its crown.

I’ve always loved the mountains. They are my happiest place. Growing up I was so fortunate to spend winters skiing in Europe and America and summers pony trekking in Wales. My childhood was mostly spent outside and because of it, whenever I’m in nature and especially the mountains, I feel an enormous peace and a profound gratitude for being able to experience it. There is no other place on earth where I feel such total peace and harmony.

MBFR know only too well the powers that the mountains possess and its founders, Lottie Pridham and Emma Bodkin have harnessed them in every way possible. Training at altitude is tougher than at sea level. Less oxygen means your body has to create more haemoglobin to manage its oxygen requirements and so everything has to work harder. The benefit, though, is when you return to sea level you’ll have an advantage as long as the extra haemoglobin remains in your system. Verbier is not a retreat for the faint hearted. You need a solid level of fitness to partake in the rigorous training which includes sprints, runs, day long hikes, hiit, cycling, strength and yoga. The average day involves a minimum of six hours of exercise – though you have the choice to opt out if it’s too much. But it’s worth it! When you have these views (below) and nature as your playground – the natural high you get is stronger than any drug or drink you can consume. Welcome my friends, to the magic of the mountains…
