Biohacking with CBD lozenges

June 28, 2019
You know those bright, brilliant moments in life where your energy is soaring and your mind and body are firing on all cylinders? Thoughts come quickly and clearly and physical movement happens almost effortlessly. You feel free, unshackled from any of life’s resistances and like you can conquer anything. I frickin love this feeling. Mental and physical effort feels pleasurable. There is momentum behind me and a surge of motivation and purpose. According to positive psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, what we experience in these moments is known as flow state, defined as an “optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best.” Csíkszentmihályi, popularised the term in his 1990 book and describes the mental state of flow as “being completely involved in an activity for its own sake.… Continue reading...

Sober Summer: Part II

September 21, 2018
Encouragement from friends    Before I left for Mykonos I spoke to a friend who’s been sober for four years. Carlo Carello, ex Boujis manager and now managing partner and owner of Albert’s Private Members Club and Mahiki Kensington. Carlo knows exactly what it’s like to be submerged in drinking culture day in, day out yet stay stone cold sober. And he’s learnt from painful experience. Being a self professed “all or nothing” character, in the past, when it came to alcohol Carlo just couldn’t call the shots wisely. Pun intended. He had a toxic relationship with alcohol and it came to the point of seriously affecting his health and friendships.… Continue reading...

Sober Summer

September 20, 2018
According to Albert Einstein the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Despite the flaws in this aphorism (since practice can make perfect) I’ve always appreciated its invitation to keep moving forwards and not stagnate on a road to N-O-W-H-E-R-E new.  My reasons for going sober I became injured seven weeks out from the London Marathon which forced me to withdraw my place. I was gutted. On Sunday 22nd April all I could do was hobble to the side lines of arguably the greatest marathon in the world to support and cheer on the champs who ran the hot heroic 26.2 miles.… Continue reading...

Curcumin to aid recovery for marathon runners

April 17, 2018
When I started training for the Virgin London Marathon I wanted everything to be “perfect”. I wanted the perfect running shoes, the perfect sports bra, the perfect training plan and the perfect diet to enable me to run the strongest, fastest marathon I could muster. I put pressure on myself to have everything “perfect”. I mean hell I even stressed about which water-carrier vest would be best! But of course attempting perfection has its pitfalls. I was putting a lot of pressure on myself and having made the decision to run the VLM very last minute, I felt anxious already about not wasting a second to become an uber runner.… Continue reading...

5 of Amsterdam’s finest Brunch Spots: the Super healthy, super indulgent and everything in-between!

December 4, 2017
I’ve just returned from a short stay in Amsterdam and I loved it. If you’re into your coffee’s and cafe culture then you too will love the dam. I’d heard so much about this eclectic city and yes, mainly how the opportunity to buy weed and magic mushrooms exists on most canal corners and how you can pop into cafes and indulge in both of these things openly. Every picture I’d seen enticed me. Cute canals, cafes, coffee shops and culture (the Anne Frank house is a MUST see) – I don’t know why it took me so long to visit!… Continue reading...

Watergate Bay Hotel with MBFR

October 4, 2017
If you’ve read my previous posts you’ll know that I’m a big fan of Mountain Beach Fitness Retreats and you’ll know why. But there’s also the added allure of exceptional accommodation for each retreat you attend and Watergate Bay Hotel is no exception. The hotel’s USP is it’s situation right on Watergate Bay beach and it takes full advantage of this with its floor to ceiling windows allowing light to flood the pool and living areas. The sense of space and serenity that this creates is mesmerising. I could sit for hours watching the surfers paddle out to sea and ride the (huge) waves back into the beach and the happy families with their rosy-cheeked children and soggy, sandy dogs playing along the shoreline.… Continue reading...

Cornish state of mind with MBFR

September 28, 2017
A  retreat with Mountain Beach Fitness Retreats means the following. You will sweat. A lot. You will be unbelievably out of  breath. You will be pushed beyond your limits. And when you think you can’t possibly move another muscle, somehow you do. You will sleep like a baby and wake up with tired, aching limbs and feel like you need a good rest. But instead you’re once again put to the test. MBFR means sprinting  up hills, hiit circuits, hiking for hours on end, running, swimming, jumping, strengthening muscles, stretching and flexing – all within the most beautiful places on the planet staying in the most luxurious of hotels/chalets.… Continue reading...

ESC. to Cornwall with MBFR

September 27, 2017
They say a change is as good as a rest and in my experience “they” are right. The feeling of swapping the known for the unknown – be it people, place or situation – always fills me with energy and enthusiasm. I’d been looking forward to a long weekend in Cornwall with Mountain Beach Fitness Retreats for weeks. Cornwall has always held a special place in my heart. It defined my childhood summers with seemingly endless sunny days (OK, yes and a few washouts holed up inside playing board games but even then it still seemed perfect) spent surfing, cycling, playing crazy golf, going for long walks along the golden dunes, crab fishing, barbecues on the beach and of course Cornish cream teas and ice cream.… Continue reading...
