My memories of racing 10k through Jerusalem’s Ancient hills out NOW

August 5, 2019
Modern Woman’s birthday issue is now out so I can finally share the monumental memories I made running Jerusalem’s ancient streets for the 10km earlier this year. This was such a special trip for me full of rare sobering moments acknowledging all the history that makes Jerusalem so special. I wanted to pack in the highlights below but I think the most memorable thing of all was running up and down the hills in the heat for the 10km. It was an intense race (heart rate was up to 191!) but so rewarding with spectacular views of Jerusalem and its ancient treasures.… Continue reading...

Salomon Trail Festival; transitioning from tarmac to turf!

June 10, 2019
Last Saturday I hopped on a train out of London and headed for the Surrey Hills in hot pursuit of the Salomon Trail running festival at Box Hill, just one hour away. Skies were grey and showers were intermittent but I was prepared for any weather with my waterproofs and extra layers so a little light rain wasn’t going to stop me. As a road runner I’m highly aware of the high impact that the constant, repetitive pounding on the tarmac has on my legs. Running mainly on the flat road means that the same muscles get used at every step, which puts them under a lot of strain.… Continue reading...

My 10k Riga Race in 33 degrees

June 5, 2019
(Latvia Part II) Morning came and with it clear skies and hot, hot sunshine. It had been a sleep starfish in your birthday suit with windows wide open kinda night. Mercury was continuing to rise and with a race time of 12.45pm I knew I was in for a scorcher. A big bonus of my late start time meant I could have two breakfast’s though and boy did I make use of that double whammy! Round one was mushrooms, spinach, toast and a smoothie and round two was porridge and mashed banana. By the time my Latvian mummy arrived to drive me to the start I was ready to rock ‘n run.… Continue reading...

Hello lovely Latvia

June 5, 2019
Earlier this month I was lucky enough to have a lovely time in Latvia – as well as a painful one (more on this in the next post)! I’m so grateful to the Latvian tourist board for the invitation to visit for many reasons, not least because without it I’m not sure I’d have ever had the delight of discovering the country’s natural charm and beauty, which deserves to be celebrated. Before my arrival in Latvia, Europe’s second greenest country, I had a pretty undeveloped idea of what to expect. Judging by its location in the Baltic region of Northern Europe (bordered by Russia, Belarus, Estonia and Lithuania) I imagined it would be colder than the UK (wrong!… Continue reading...

Sharpen the Saw

May 10, 2019
In Stephen R Covey’s self-improvement book titled The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People he lists “Sharpen the Saw” as one of the key habits. This means that to be effective, we must devote the time to renewing ourselves physically, spiritually, mentally, and socially. I know – it’s a challenge to find adequate time to ensure all spheres are moving along swimmingly  – yet Stephen stresses continuous renewal allows us to synergistically increase our ability to practice each effective habit. The habits are: Be Proactive Begin with the End in Mind Put First Things First Think Win-Win Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood Synergise Sharpen the Saw The seventh habit, Sharpen the Saw, is focused around renewal. … Continue reading...

Warm-up before you run. Here’s a video of some moves that work well!

December 17, 2018
Warming up before the main part of any workout is crucial. You want to gradually increase your heart rate so  your muscles gradually become warmer and receive an increased oxygen supply. This will increase your performance and reduce the risk of injury. Injuries occur more often when the muscles are not warm and tear as a result of going into exercise too vigorously without the proper warm-up. I hope this helps! Usually, I perform theses movements three times after a 5-minute slow jog. After I then jog for another 3 minutes before increasing the intensity for the main body of my run.… Continue reading...

Motivation: “You must do the things you think you cannot do.” Eleanor Roosevelt

December 11, 2018
I’ve written about winter motivation in my latest Modern Woman column (previous post) and now, I want to now share what motivates me the most personally to get up on the cold dark winter days and any day of the year to train and push my body hard. Sometimes I wake up feeling tired. I know – groundbreaking right?! Stick with me. This Monday was a perfect example. I’d had a fun, frivolous weekend away from fitness focusing on self indulgence instead to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It was hedonistic and worth it. However..! On Monday morning I woke up early in a warm bed and the thought of going out to sprint or run a long distance just seemed like a bad joke.… Continue reading...

Cold Weather Running Kit Essentials

November 20, 2018
Bbbrrrrr! Baby it’s COLD outside! After the glorious sunny autumn weather we’ve been treated to recently these frosty temperatures are tough to take! Today, I so nearly didn’t go on my run. It was 4 degrees outside, raining and I’d only slept 5 hours due to hormone-induced insomnia. I felt tired and I couldn’t warm up even with the heating on. But I had my week’s running schedule already set and I was sticking to it. So I put my (one too many) layers and waterproofs on not forgetting my gloves and off I went. About 5 minutes in my cheeks were rosy and my energy was returning.… Continue reading...

Peloton: The hottest new home and studio workout

November 12, 2018
In the last six months I’d heard a lot about Peloton. One of my favourite podcasts – The Tim Ferris show – is sponsored by peloton and that alone was enough to make me eager to try it since I trust Tim’s high reviews to be legit – sponsored or not. But at this point, Peloton was only available in the USA. I forgot about it for a while until my friend and runner extraordinare Becs Gentry, moved from London across the pond to NYC to instruct the studio run classes.  I’ve been captivated by her IG stories where Becs shares snip-bits of the Peloton classes she teaches.… Continue reading...

Audio-technica ATH-SPORT 70BT: The Wireless headphones that don’t cost the earth

October 23, 2018
I recently ran the Berlin marathon with some wireless headphones with a pretty pricey cost attached. They were worth the investment for me but since then I’ve trialled the Audio-technica wireless headphones which are cheaper yet still high quality. So, since many of you have been asking about a cheaper alternative I really don’t know a better suggestion than these. The ATH-SPORT 70BT wireless in-ear headphones feature 9 mm performance-enhanced, carbon-coated drivers which basically means they deliver clear and powerful audio. When I’m hitting the track especially for my speed workouts this is important to me! The powerful beats really do help to push me to keep faster pace.… Continue reading...
